Christmas in Kansas City: Shooting the Country Club Plaza Lights

Usually Sunday night after the four-day Thanksgiving holiday is an evening to relax and turn in early. That wasn’t the Giralda Tower and the Plaza Lightscase this year.

Sarah was out wandering through parking garages, scoping out shots from the sidewalk and even camped out in the middle of the street to take photos of an 83-year-old Kansas City tradition, the Country Club Plaza lights. It was chilly, but it could have been a lot worse. And, by 1 a.m. Monday or so, the Plaza was nearly deserted.

The lights were officially turned on Thanksgiving evening when tens of thousands of people crowded into the Country Club Plaza. They’ll remain lit each evening through Sunday, Jan. 13.

The best spot for photographs? Probably the top level of the somewhat dilapidated Jack Henry garage (on the top floor, you can see the floor below through holes in the concrete!)  Best place for shots of the famous Giralda Tower? Across the street (and a bit to the east) near the J.C. Nichols Fountain.

We  hope you enjoy Sarah’s efforts. Prints are available for purchase either matted or unmatted, and also in hand-crafted four- and six-card gift card sets.

Butterfly Gala for the Spofford Home

Photo of Monarch Butterfly for Spofford Home photoSaturday night at 6 p.m., the Spofford Home, a Kansas City organization which is part of Cornerstones Of Care, will be holding the 2012 Butterfly Gala and auction at the DoubleTree Hotel in Overland Park. This fundraiser helps raise money so that the organization can provide residential treatment, summer camp, and other services to at-risk youth with behavioral difficulties and various mental diagnoses.

From the event page:  “The butterfly is a powerful image for us. It represents the transformation and growth we believe occurs as a child heals, makes a fresh start and takes flight. Give a child wings and Spofford will help them soar.”The image you see is a framed 11×14 signed print of a male monarch butterfly, with informative facts on the back. It is enclosed in a 12×16 floating black gallery frame. Simply Stunning Images is donating this for the auction on Saturday evening. We wish much luck and success to the Spofford Home, as we support the cause they represent. It is our hope that this small doSigned Monarch Butterfly print for Spofford Homenation will help.Tell us, would you bid on this if attending an auction, and if so, how high would you go for an item like this? We’d love to hear some opinions and feedback!

A great look at small business

Small business is about families cardSarah found this on Facebook. Nothing could say more about the way we feel about our photography business, Simply Stunning Images.

Welcome to our home on the Web

Sarah Coe has been shooting photos for almost as long as she can remember.  Every trip – whether it’s a short hop around town or a road trip out of town – is likely to have some kind of photo-shoot element built in. Some people cry at weddings. Sarah shoots photos. Some people see fountains. Sarah sees photo ops.

Simply Stunning Images and Simply Butterflies are an outgrowth of that passion. With a special affinity for butterflies, nature photos and landscapes, Sarah has amassed a library of spectacular images. These Web sites are her effort to share some of those photos at prices well below those charged by commercial galleries.

On the homefront. Sarah’s passion for photography was passed along to teenage-son William and tween daughter Brooke. William asked for a new camera for his birthday in a few days. Brooke has asked for a Nikon for a combined Christmas/birthday present.

We hope you’ll enjoy our effort, and even if you don’t see something you’d like to purchase, please say hi.
