Christmas in Kansas City: Shooting the Country Club Plaza Lights

Usually Sunday night after the four-day Thanksgiving holiday is an evening to relax and turn in early. That wasn’t the Giralda Tower and the Plaza Lightscase this year.

Sarah was out wandering through parking garages, scoping out shots from the sidewalk and even camped out in the middle of the street to take photos of an 83-year-old Kansas City tradition, the Country Club Plaza lights. It was chilly, but it could have been a lot worse. And, by 1 a.m. Monday or so, the Plaza was nearly deserted.

The lights were officially turned on Thanksgiving evening when tens of thousands of people crowded into the Country Club Plaza. They’ll remain lit each evening through Sunday, Jan. 13.

The best spot for photographs? Probably the top level of the somewhat dilapidated Jack Henry garage (on the top floor, you can see the floor below through holes in the concrete!)  Best place for shots of the famous Giralda Tower? Across the street (and a bit to the east) near the J.C. Nichols Fountain.

We  hope you enjoy Sarah’s efforts. Prints are available for purchase either matted or unmatted, and also in hand-crafted four- and six-card gift card sets.

Welcome to our home on the Web

Sarah Coe has been shooting photos for almost as long as she can remember.  Every trip – whether it’s a short hop around town or a road trip out of town – is likely to have some kind of photo-shoot element built in. Some people cry at weddings. Sarah shoots photos. Some people see fountains. Sarah sees photo ops.

Simply Stunning Images and Simply Butterflies are an outgrowth of that passion. With a special affinity for butterflies, nature photos and landscapes, Sarah has amassed a library of spectacular images. These Web sites are her effort to share some of those photos at prices well below those charged by commercial galleries.

On the homefront. Sarah’s passion for photography was passed along to teenage-son William and tween daughter Brooke. William asked for a new camera for his birthday in a few days. Brooke has asked for a Nikon for a combined Christmas/birthday present.

We hope you’ll enjoy our effort, and even if you don’t see something you’d like to purchase, please say hi.
